Profile

I'm a professor of history of science and technology at Maastricht University. I'm currently PI of an NWO project, Managing Scarcity, on the history of the oil industry's involvement with alternative energy and global environmental governance from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s - the period when *some* oil firms were leaders in solar, geothermal, and nuclear energy and also sponsored high-quality climate research and drew global attention to the problems associated with climate change and greenhouse emissions. The project therefore aims in part to explain why such activities were abandoned in the late 1980s as the oil industry turned decisively toward climate denialist/obfuscation strategies.
